Pension owner Mehmet Demirci speaks limited English but can hand draw hiking maps within the Kaçkar Mountains.

Guests are free to use the common room with cable TV and the kitchen. Internet use costs 1 million TKL per hour. The pension owner/manager, Aydin, is very friendly and accommodating. The Pergamum Acropolis is within walking distance from the pension.

This hotel is about a 3-star value for US$35 and an absolute 5-star value for US$11.

At dawn and dusk, just step outside and watch the rising or setting sun over İshakpaşa Palace. It's beautiful.

Comments: Paradise has dorm rooms (4 million TKL per person), private double rooms without WC (10 million TKL), private double rooms with WC (12 million TKL), and 2 cave double rooms in a fairy chimney (12 million TKL). All room prices include your choice from 6 breakfasts. The upper cave room has floor rugs and a double-bed-sized foam pad with sheets and blankets. A rug and 2 cushions on a raised piece of stone make a sitting area. The cave room has a light and one power outlet. The "door" is a 75cm (2.5 foot) high hole covered with a plank of wood. Bath towels are not provided. Shared sit-down toilets have toilet paper. Showers are always hot. Hotel staff will do a load of laundry (up to 5kg) for 4 million TKL. The pension owner, Mehmet, takes guests on walks through the Cappadocian valleys free of charge.

A variety of less expensive rooms are also available. Towels and toilet paper are provided. Breakfast is delicious and consists of egg, feta cheese, olives, baguette, and tea or coffee.

Comments: Part of Hotel-Pension Tükmen and using the same entrance, the pension is one building behind the hotel building. Since the hotel was such good value during low season, we chose to stay slightly cheaper at the pension in high season expecting the quality of the pension and hotel to be about equivalent except for the private WC. In fact, the pension is a cluster of dilapidated rooms with worn furniture that could be found at a garbage dump. Shared bathrooms are filthy. Pension rooms have single beds, metal cabinet, nightstands, and a radiator. Shared WC has hot shower, sink, and sit-down toilet. Towels and toilet paper are provided. Breakfast is delicious and consists of egg, feta cheese, olives, baguette, and tea or coffee.

İzmir

Comments: Spacious rooms have a single bed, double bed, dresser, nightstand, desk, chair, telephone, central heater, and WC with hot shower, sink, and sit-down toilet. Towels and toilet paper are provided. Oba Campground is behind the hotel. There are no points of interest near the hotel, and the ocean is concrete-lined making it an unappealing stroll. From the Izmir Otogar (bus station), take but 555 to its end-point and transfer to bus 3 which passes through Güzelbahçe in front of the hotel. Travel time between the Otogar and hotel is 90 minutes. Buy all city bus tickets needed for going and return at the white ticket booth next to the local bus stop at the Otogar (350,000 TKL per ticket). Tickets cannot be purchased on the bus and there are few ticket booths along the way.

Kaş

Comments: 75% of the rooms have a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Guests are free to use the spacious kitchen on the lower floor. Breakfast on demand is 2 million TKL per person. The owner speaks limited English, but she's very patient and caring. We had no trouble communications our needs with body language.

Olimpos

Comments: This pension is located in an orange grove. The spring orange blossoms smell delicious! Double rooms with private WC (12 million TKL for 2) have a double bed, single bed, nightstand, and WC with hot shower, sink, and sit-down toilet. Bath towels and toilet paper are provided if requested. "Tree house" rooms (10 million TKL for 2) are elevated lighted shacks with a double-bed-sized foam pad with sheets and blanket. All room prices include dinner, breakfast, and unlimited apple tea and coffee. Both dinner and breakfast were surprisingly large and delicious portions. A nightly round-trip shuttle to the Chimaera Flames is available after dinner for 2 million per person.

Pamukkale

Bath towels and toilet paper are provided. Food served at this hotel is mediocre and overpriced for the quality. Breakfast on demand is 1.5 million TKL. Dinner selections range from about 2-4 million TKL. Unfortunately, the restaurants in the town are also unappetizing. Guests are free to use the common room with TV, VCD, and English-language cd-movies. Internet use costs 1 million TKL per hour.

Breakfast and dinner are healthy, delicious, and plentiful. Guests eat together on the terrace. The common room is draped with Turkish-style cloth and has TV, VCR, and English-language videos. Internet use costs 1 million TKL per hour. The pension owners/managers, Steve and Harry, provide free transfers to Ephesus (3 km), hiking trails (2-3 km), and local restaurants. Their amusing sign is evidence that competing pension touts haven't been honest with newly arriving tourists.

Tatvan

Guests can use private mineral baths on the ground floor anytime between 08:30-22:30 free of charge. The restaurant charges US$10 per person for dinner. The cheaper alternative for lodging and meals is to stay in Gökçedere, a town that's only 5 minutes walk from the public hot springs in Termal. One good option in Gökçedere is the Pansiyon Riza Tel: (0226) 676-7161, 10 million TKL per double room.

Trabzon
